Lincoln, the Movie

We are so excited to share a very special opportunity with our Exploration families! Gabriela Stiles, one of our Exploration educational facilitators, has organized a wonderful event for our older learners!

If there are 40 participants, she is offering to rent out the beautiful Art Theater for our learners to enjoy a showing of the movie “Lincoln” followed by a Q & A session! This is a wonderful opportunity for our tween and teen learners to enjoy a bit of history in the comfort of a movie theater! We hope to see you there!

Date: February 21, 2017
Time: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Location: Art Theater, 2025 EAST 4TH STREET, LONG BEACH, CA 90814 562.438.5435

The History and Culture through Cinema project proudly presents the critically acclaimed 2012 film “Lincoln” (PG 13) at the beautiful and historic Art Theater in Long Beach. The film focuses on Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and his attempt to get the 13th amendment passed as the Civil War comes to a close. Winner of two Oscars, including one for Daniel Day-Lewis’s compelling portrayal of Abraham Lincoln, it was directed by Steven Spielberg with music composed by John Williams (Star Wars).

An optional worksheet will be emailed to participants to encourage interested learners to explore the events related to those depicted in the film. The event will include a short introduction to put the movie into further historical context and will be followed by a brief question and answer session.

This showing is intended for Tweens and Teens, ages 13+. Though not a movie focused on violence or language, both are present at times, as well as era-accurate racial epithets. Some of the scenes may be either too intense or dialogue heavy for younger children.

PSAT and SAT Information

Juniors who are considering a four-year college directly after high school will want to sign up for the SAT here. PSAT practice tests are also available for free on this website. In addition to tutors and workshops, the College Board also recommends Personalized Study on Khan Academy .

Concurrent Enrollment in High School

Taking college classes removes the fear and mystery of college and prepares learners for further success. If you are interested in having your learner enroll in an upcoming course at your local community college, enrollment time is rapidly approaching! Please discuss this option with your educational facilitator so that you are ready with any necessary paperwork.

High School Round Table and Q & A

Over the coming weeks, our high school director, Mayli D. Levin, M.Ed., who has homeschooled since the early 1990s, will be hosting a series of high school round table discussions in a variety of areas. The first one is this Friday, January 13, in Los Angeles. See the flier below for more info, and sign up here if interested in attending!

High School — PSAT Update

Great news! If you would like your learner to practice for the SAT at home instead of at a local public school, you may do so here! The College Board has a feature where learners can take the PSAT at home and correct it on their own.

High School — Taking the PSAT

Is your learner planning on going directly to a four-year college or university after high school? If so, sophomores (or juniors who have not yet taken the PSAT) will want to register to take the PSAT test at their local high school to prepare for the regular SAT exam that juniors and seniors take in the spring.

To register at your local public high school as a homeschool learner for the PSAT/NMSQT, please contact the counseling office at your local school to learn their dates and how to register. It will cost approximately $15 to take the test. The school testing dates will either be October 15, 19 or November 2, so please contact them right away to register and be included on their testing list.

On the day of the test, there will be a bubble on the scantron specifically for homeschool learners to mark. For more information, please visit the College Board website . Testing results will be accessible through the personal account you need to create here.

iLEAD’s Speech & Debate Camp for Incoming 9th-12th Graders Hosted by iLEAD NoHo

iLEAD NoHo’s Speech & Debate Coach Iain Lampert says:

“I’ve been running local Speech and Debate day camps since 2010, but this is the most exciting one yet.”

When? June 20 to 24,10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where? iLEAD North Hollywood (14701 Friar Street, Van Nuys, CA 91411).

How much? If you are enrolled in — or will be in the coming year — an iLEAD site, this is completely free — no strings attached! Otherwise, it’s $275 for early registration (before June 1), or $325 for late registration. The money is used to fund the program; there are discounts for referrals. It also pays for food/drink during the camp’s lunchtime.

Job Interview Tips

If your learner (16+) is looking for work this summer, Knott’s Berry Farm published a list of interviewing tips here. Work permits are required for minors in California, so remember to fill out a work permit form prior to summer and get it to your EF for approval.
