iLEAD Santa Clarita Valley Studio
Who can build a tall tower using jelly beans, marshmallows and toothpicks? Our iLEAD learners can, that’s who! On April 12, families met at Valencia Heritage Park to conquer the challenge of building tall towers. Some learners used just jelly beans or marshmallows while others used both. We also had an extra challenge due to the crazy strong winds. Our towers were tall and they also withstood strong gusty winds. We had a great time and met some new friends, too!
At the March park day in Valencia, families had a great time making leprechaun traps! Learners designed, built and created leprechaun traps to catch leprechauns. Most of the traps used gold coins and rainbows to attract those sneaky leprechauns. Some of the traps had devices that dropped on top of the leprechauns to catch them, while others had sticky tape so the leprechauns couldn’t get away. The kids were so innovative and it was fun spending time together!
Our January STEM Park Day was so much fun! Learners designed a snow scoop that could clear a “snow yard” (pan filled with rice). The younger learners were successful in their creative designs while the older learners were challenged to see who could clear the yard in the shortest amount of time. It was great to see learners working together and providing feedback to improve their designs! Our next STEM Park Day will be on Feb. 8 at 10 am at Valencia Heritage Park.
Our Dec, 14 Candy Cane Calamity was an outstanding success! Learners had to carefully design packaging to protect candy canes from breaking. We tested our creations by dropping the packages on the ground. It was a fun day filled with collaborating, learning and experimenting! Thank you to everyone who participated.
On Nov. 29, some of our learners came to the learning center in Santa Clarita and volunteered their time and talents to make fleece blankets for Project Linus. These cozy blankets will be given to children who are in the hospital or have experienced trauma of some kind. Children helping children – how incredibly special! To find out more information about Project Linus or to see how your family can get involved, please visit their website.
We had our first STEM Park Day in Valencia. Learners had to create a shelter to protect a pilgrim from wind, rain, and snow. After they created their shelter, we tested it by making sure it could withstand wind, keep the pilgrim dry from rain, and then we made sure it wouldn’t collapse with the weight of snow (water bottle weight). It was a great time designing and building these shelters and we made new friends, too!
Please join us on December 14 for our next STEM Park Day.
Exploration SCV’s Entrepreneur Fair was amazing. Our talented learners made and sold pillows, home roasted coffee, jewelry, ornaments, body scrubs and delicious baked goods. They’re such an impressive group! Thank you to all those who participated and made this a jolly good time for all!
