Piecemakers Country Store was established in 1978. It has grown from a tiny quilt shop to a full service construction company and thriving country store that offers gifts, quilts, antiques, fabrics, notions, books and patterns, as well as a cozy tea room and classes to learn every kind of grass roots art and craft imaginable. Piecemakers is located in Costa Mesa and offers year-round classes for kids.

Vendor Spotlight: Adventures in the Schoolhouse

The Little Red Schoolhouse (or Adventures in the Schoolhouse on the vendor search tool) makes learning fun! Learners have the opportunity to learn to write neatly with proper letter formation, capitalization, and punctuation, using the ‘Handwriting Without Tears‘ multi-sensory curriculum for printing and cursive. They also incorporate phonics, spelling, grammar and poetry in a fun, engaging way that works for ALL learning styles and students with learning differences. The Little Red Schoolhouse is located in Tustin on a backyard mini-farm where learners experience hands-on learning. They interact and care for the animals and garden as they read, write and learn. If you are interested in using funds, they can be found by searching the vendor name “Adventures in the Schoolhouse”.

One of our recently added vendors, Play.Sing.Act, is excited to offer educational opportunities to your learners by:

  • Promoting the performing arts as an integral form of education by utilizing the vast array of technology available.
  • Offering individuals (regardless of age, location, and experience) the opportunity to participate in the performing arts through the use of individual Zoom lessons or group classes.
  • Integrating technology and the performing arts through the use of instructional videos and curriculum packages.

Vendor Spotlight: Miacademy

Miacademy is an educational website for K-8th grade learners. Miacademy customizes educational challenges based on a learner’s specific needs. The site engages learners and encourages higher level thinking in a creative way.

Miacademy provides hundreds of videos and games in a wide range of subjects including math, language arts, science, history, geography, typing and foreign languages. Learners earn in-game currency that can be used to buy pets or extra rooms for their castle, design furniture, clothes and artwork, and more! Learners can also run their own store, write for the newspaper and create and upload videos for other Miacademy users to enjoy!

Everything on the site is carefully moderated and parents/teachers are in control of the learner activities. Detailed reports are available for all activities and includes measurable learning progress.

Stepping Stones

Stepping Stones, located in Newport Beach, offers a personalized approach to education for twice exceptional learners otherwise known as 2e learners. Twice Exceptional learners are those that display exceptional intellectual abilities coupled with specific learning challenges. These learners can fall into two categories: those with mild disabilities that are able to mask learning difficulties with their giftedness, and those learners with more severe learning problems that may actually mask their giftedness. Through small group instruction and trained learning coaches, Stepping Stones breaks through these barriers allowing these learners to reach their full potential. Join Outdoor Schooling for Farm Fridays! This is a special hands-on opportunity for your learner to experience farm life. They will learn animal science while actively participating in animal care. Each class focuses on a particular type of animal, integrating animal care, feeding and handling skills. Classes are held on a five acre farm in Calabasas.

Vendor Spotlight: Mariners and Mariner Juniors

Are you a teenager looking for adventure and excitement on the high seas with a spirited group of like-minded friends?

Mariners is a Sea Scout unit in Dana Point that offers co-ed boating programs for young people ages 14-18 and a Mariner Junior program for ages 12-14. Both are designed to allow young people an opportunity to have fun with their friends in sailboats of all sizes. Learners will be introduced to nautical skills and learn how to sail a variety of boats, from 14-foot Capris to 38-foot fully equipped yachts, not to mention the 100-foot tall ship known as the “Spirit of Dana Point.”

Vendor Spotlight: Art Steps

Art Steps

Art Steps is an individualized, year-round program that provides step-by-step guidance that considers the interests of each learner. Each class is lively and engaging. Kind, caring teachers work one-on-one with each learner to build one skill upon another, from simple to complex. A variety of media are taught, including crayons, colored pencils, pastels, watercolor, acrylics and more. The goal is that a learner becomes a highly skilled oil painter who can use these skills as a foundation to go in any artistic direction he or she chooses.

Vendor Spotlight: EverWild’s Environmental Conservatory Program

EverWild is a local nonprofit and nature immersion program that recently launched an environmental conservancy program for kids ages 11-15. The program is free (donation-based) and takes place at their local community garden, Kiss the Ground in Venice from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. They are launching the program on Feb. 13 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. For more information, visit here.

They develop courses that teach real-world innovation skills to youth at a fair price. All of their courses are project-based so youth can learn through hands-on building. Brave Writer

Need some support teaching your child how to write? Writing is an essential skill to learn and is often a difficult one to teach. One of our vendors, Brave Writer, supports and nurtures the homeschooling family in the area of language arts and writing from age 5 until college.

They offer a Home Study Program for those who prefer to work at their own pace with a manual in their hands. They also offer online writing and language classes for those who enjoy more structure, support and accountability. All instructors have been homeschooled or are homeschooling their children, and are published writers. All materials and courses are original to Brave Writer. No matter which program you choose, Brave Writer assures access to ask for ongoing help in executing the processes in their materials. They also have a discussion board where moms can help each other!

Ekata Training Center is a state-licensed child care facility known as a “21st Century Conservatory.” Ekata specializes in movement-based learning for the whole family. Founded by UCLA professor Edward Monaghan, Ekata offers classes in several unique martial arts, hip hop, physical conditioning and yoga. In addition, Ekata offers private music lessons for guitar, bass, piano and voice.
More than just physical training, Ekata teaches “mindfulness” (training the mind to hold a single point of focus), which enables children to regulate emotions and behavior. Learners develop skills to manage conflict and handle bullies. Along with children’s classes, Ekata offers a full program for adults which includes stress reduction, physical training and a full state-of-the-art gym – even massages and acupuncture! When you bring the kids for class, you can also work out or schedule a relaxing massage!
