Learner Spotlight

Samuel Medina-Negrete, questions answered by mom and the learner.

What languages do you speak?

English and Spanish

What is the best part about knowing more than one language?

It is good for him because he can help others who do not know English. I can also help translate for my family (as spoken by mom).

What is your favorite saying in your native language?

“Pancito” – It’s a cultural tradition in Mexico to have bread with chocolate. On Dias de los Muertos you eat sweet bread with chocolate.

What is your favorite subject?

Science.

What is a family tradition that you enjoy?

We try to have or celebrate both Mexican and American traditions. So we celebrate Dia de los Muertos and Halloween. The Day of Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving, we clean the entire house and decorate for Christmas. My favorite holiday is Dia De los Reyes. It is in January and it is to honor the Three Wise Men. Our family comes together and we eat sweet bread and all the kids get presents.

What advice would you give to someone trying to learn a new language?

If one family speaks Spanish, they should only speak Spanish. If one family member speaks English, practice English. This way they get to keep their own culture and language. It’s very important in our family for our kids to know both languages and cultures. They were born here but our families are from Mexico. So with my mom I speak Spanish and with my dad I practice my English. We have to be respectful of both languages.

How long have you been part of an independent study program?

This is my 2nd year.

What do you like about independent study?

I like that he can be focused on topics and certain things he is interested in. He really enjoys science and learning about robots. This year he has put together his own solar powered car. When he was in school, if he didn’t understand the teacher, they would just move on. It didn’t feel like they cared if Sam understood what was being taught. With homeschooling, I can teach him things and it’s experiential learning. He can actually experience what I am teaching. If we are learning about government, I can take him to city hall and meet the people who work in government.

What career would you like to have?

A pizza maker or an Italian chef. I love spaghetti and I want to make spaghetti for people.
