Let’s Play – A Cardboard Carnival Game Design Challenge (Grades 1-2)

Learners in 1st and 2nd grade are invited to this Learner University opportunity where they will explore the concepts of design and engineering within the context of games they see at carnivals. They will learn about how games are created, the importance of rules and fun mechanics, and the role of creativity in problem-solving. They will consider how carnival games engage players and what elements make them successful, sparking their interest in the engineering and artistic aspects of game creation using only cardboard.

  • Class Sessions: February 11 through March 11. There is also an in-person option on March 14.
  • Class Times: 1:00-2:00 PM

Learner University: Design Your Own House (Grades 5-6)

Attention, 5th-6th graders: You don’t want to miss Design Your Own House! You just bought a new home and now it’s time to fill it up with all the cool furniture that will make it an awesome place for the whole family to live. But where should you put everything? How much space will it require? And how much will it all cost? Let’s figure it all out as you design your own place to live and show it off in 3D!

  • Session Dates: February 13, 20, 27; March 6, 13, 20

Learner University: Who Killed Otzi? (Grades 6-8)

Learners in grades 6-8 are invited to answer the question “Who Killed Otzi?” During the Learner University opportunity, participants will investigate the theories of how Otzi died. Learners will use the evidence and artifacts discovered. Learners will develop a claim, provide evidence that supports their claim, and give relevant reasoning for their evidence.

Class Dates: February 18, 25; March 4, 11
