Presentation of Learning: Art as Expression of the Self

“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better,” Albert Einstein once observed, a perspective that guided iLEAD Exploration learners in grades 2-8 as they engaged in two distinct art units this fall under the guidance of art teacher Daryl Bibcoff. Together, these experiences supported a shared goal of helping learners grow as authentic individuals, using art to better understand both the world around them and their own inner voice.
In the landscape unit, learners explored how natural environments can communicate emotion and meaning. In grades 4-5, learners investigated “Mountains & Mood,” reflecting on how mountains can evoke feelings such as strength, peace, or mystery. Through careful observation and discussion, they examined how shape, value, and scale influence emotional impact, then applied those ideas in their own expressive compositions. Learners in grades 2-3 approached landscapes through imagination, creating vibrant skies full of movement and color. They added hand-drawn, collaged animals to build storybook-inspired scenes, blending creativity with foundational skills in drawing and composition. Meanwhile, learners in grades 6-8 studied the work of artist Robin Meade, whose bold colors and energetic brushwork inspired dynamic, expressive landscapes. Through sketching, revising, and refining, learners created artworks that captured both movement and mood while reflecting their individual perspectives.

In a separate unit, learners explored the heart as a symbol of emotion, identity, and connection through mixed-media art. Learners in grades 4-8 began by identifying meaningful themes, such as hope, courage, friendship, or growth. They translated these ideas into layered compositions, combining color, texture, and collage materials to create depth and contrast. Their work demonstrates thoughtful decision-making and a strong sense of personal voice. Younger learners in grades 2-3 approached the project with a spirit of play and exploration, filling their hearts with bright colors, patterns, and tactile materials. Through cutting, gluing, and layering, they created joyful, imaginative pieces while strengthening essential art skills.

Learners who participated in these classes practiced observing deeply, creating thoughtfully, and expressing themselves with intention. Whether looking outward to nature or inward to personal meaning, each learner developed confidence in sharing a unique perspective—an essential step in becoming an authentic individual.
