Financial Aid

Financial aid is an important part of the college search and admission process. Families must have a financial aid strategy as they search for colleges. This section explains some of the different aspects of financial aid. Remember there is an affordable college for every learner but to find that college, you must understand the different aspects of financial aid.

Forms

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), CSS profile, and Dream Act application (for undocumented/dreamer students) are forms used to apply for financial aid. Learn about each form in the video.

Loans

Loans can be used to finance college but must be paid back. There are federal loans, private loans, and even parent loans. Learn about the differences between subsidized and unsubsidized loans in this video.

Scholarships

Merit-based aid, also known as scholarships, does not need to be paid back. Scholarships are awarded for academic, visual and performing arts, leadership, community service, and more.

Need-Based Aid

Need-based aid typically comes in the form of grants. Grants are awarded by the federal and state government, by the colleges themselves, and through other organizations.

Net Price Calculators

A net price calculator can be found on every college’s financial aid page. Families can enter their financial data and receive the estimated cost of attendance. Remember that this is just an estimate and the final cost will be on the financial aid award letter.
