MAP FAQs

How do I create the best testing environment at home?

The best advice we have is to create a test taking atmosphere that is conducive to focus and engagement. We suggest removing any toys or additional electronics from the test taking area and reducing the amount of activity that might be around the learner while testing. (e.g., siblings watching TV in the same room). It can also be helpful to reduce loud noises or conversations that may occur in or around the same space as the learner. It is also a good idea to make sure that the learner has eaten before the test, to remove any interruptions that hunger may cause. An environment with limited distractions helps learners stay engaged and focused on their assessment. When learners are focused, they are better suited to do their best, ensuring reliable, accurate insights for their teacher to personalize instruction.

How will I know when the learner’s test is complete?

The test will notify your learner that the test is complete and show their RIT score on the final page.

What happens if…

We lose internet connection at home while we’re testing?

Your learner’s test will be suspended with no loss of progress and your EF will reach out to you to get reconnected.

I need help with an internet connection?

Contact your EF for guidance and help with this issue.

My learner sees a “Slow down sloth” during testing?

Encourage your learner to take the assessment at their own pace, and to try their best on each question.

Your learner’s teacher will be able to get your learner started again.

Can I help my learner if they struggle or get frustrated?

The primary purpose of MAP Growth is to figure out what learners know and what they’re ready to learn next so EFs can provide the most appropriate content to help them grow. Helping your learner answer questions compromises test data and makes it harder for EFs to provide personalized instruction.

We recommend that you encourage your learner to do their absolute best, but that you don’t provide any hints or assist them in answering questions. It’s also great to remind them that unlike some tests they have taken, every learner who takes the MAP Growth test gets some answers right and some answers wrong because the test is adapting to the learner and providing harder or easier questions based on their answers.

What do I do if I need help?

Contact your EF! They are more than happy to troubleshoot and help you before, during and after the test.
