Physical Fitness (PFT) Overview

What is the PFT?
Each year, a physical fitness assessment (PFT) is required by the state. This assessment for California schools is called the FITNESSGRAM®. iLEAD’s physical fitness testing is conducted by your educational facilitator each spring. Find more information at CA Department of Education.

Who takes the physical fitness test?
Learners in grades 5, 7, and 9 only.

Is the test mandatory?
The test is mandatory for public school learners in grades 5, 7, and 9 whether or not they are enrolled in a physical education class. Learners cannot opt out of the test. If a learner is physically unable to test due to injury, impairment, or illness, a doctor’s note must be provided.

The PFT encompasses five skills and/or pieces of information:

This Healthy Fitness Zones chart provides information based on gender and grade level.

How do I prepare my child for this test?
Videos are available for you to watch and practice with for the skill areas that will be tested. It is recommended your child works on these skills throughout the year.
