Each month, we focus on one Schoolwide Learner Outcome, or SLOgan of the month, which helps everyone at iLEAD work on an area for growth and success together! For LP 8, our SLOgan is Grit.
When understood with appropriate nuance, grit can be a powerful tool for growth, as well as a predictor of future success. Grit can also be understood as resilience, stick-to-it-ive-ness, and perseverance. According to academic research on the topic, learners’ access to grit is often related to their access to social capital, which means any conversation about grit should be approached with curiosity and a willingness to empathize and support learner success!
Here are some resources and ideas to explore grit:
- Talk about the “I can…” statements for grit with your learners: “I finish what I begin, even when I feel like quitting; I stick with an activity and work hard even if it takes a long time to complete.”
- Watch Angela Lee Duckworth’s TED Talk presentation on the power of grit!
- This Edutopia article on grit has several practical ideas for facilitating grit, as well as a good definition and rationale for why we should be incorporating grit into our social-emotional learning.
- This free resource from Teachers Pay Teachers helps scaffold goal setting and the practice of grit to achieve larger long-term goals.
