Monday message 09.18.2023
Every year from September 15 to October 15, we honor our ancestors from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America during Hispanic Heritage Month.
September 15 was chosen as the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month because it marks the anniversary of the independence of these Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile also celebrate their independence during this period on September 16 and September 18.
If you would like to learn more about this special month, please visit this site.
Below is a list of activities you can complete with your learner to learn more about Hispanic Heritage.
Younger Learners Resource: The Cazuela That the Farm Maiden Stirred
This story describes coming together to make a traditional rice pudding. In addition to learning many Spanish words, listening together allows you to discuss how to approach any unfamiliar words when you are reading in any language!
- Listen to the book together on Epic.
- Check out all these additional resources that include discussion questions, recipes, flashcards, and math activities!
Older Learners Resource (Grades 4-8)
- Read and reflect on “Esperanza Rising.”
- Use this guide over the course of the LP to read or listen to Pam Munoz Ryan’s historical fiction about her grandmother’s story!
Synchronous Instruction Event (Grades 2-5)
