iLEAD Exploration’s ELD Program

Our English Language Development (ELD) program at iLEAD Exploration is excited to work together to support your learner. We would like to share a few highlights with you and your family about our program!

EL Learner Spotlight

Siblings Vina and Kajy Randrianjoary

What languages do you speak?

We speak Malagasy, English, and a little bit of French and Spanish.

What is the best part about knowing more than one language?

Vina: I can talk to different people from different countries, and I can teach my friends too.

Kajy: I can talk to different people around the world and make many friends.

What is your favorite saying in your native language?

Vina: “Za te hilalao.” (“I want to play.”)

Kajy: “Tiako be ianao.” (“I love you so much.”)

What is your favorite subject and why?

Vina: I love mathematics because I like counting and measuring. I have learned how to measure in feet.

Kajy: I love science because it teaches me how to be healthy.

What is a family tradition that you enjoy?

Vina: Christmas!

I love being with my dad and mum and my sisters, sitting together while watching movies and cartoons on Christmas Eve.

Kajy: Once a week, when my daddy has a break, we are used to having our family time. We plan something together like going to the museum or to the park or to the beach.

What is your favorite hobby?

Vina:
I love playing soccer and going to the pool during summer.

Kajy:  Ballet, spending time with my friends, swimming.

What advice would you give to someone trying to learn a new language?

Vina:
Speak with your friends and read books and watch videos in the language you want to learn.

Kajy:  I would tell them to ask someone to teach them and speak with them.

How long have you been part of our independent study program?

We have been part of the independent study program since last year (school year 2023-2024), so it’s been one year now.

What do you like about independent study?

Vina:  I learn a lot of things with my mum and on the tablet with different teachers every week.

Kajy:  I can always ask my mum about anything I want to know, and I have so much fun during the video with my teacher online.

What career would you like to have?

Vina:  I would like to be a police officer because I can rescue people when there are some bad guys or when they are in trouble.

Kajy:  I want to be a doctor to help people when they are expecting a baby.

Summative ELPAC Testing

Beginning in late February and March, English Language Learners will take the Summative ELPAC. The English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) is California’s assessment system that is used to determine the English language proficiency of learners whose primary language is not English. The ELPAC assesses four domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The summative ELPAC measures how well a learner is progressing with English development in each of the four domains.

The summative assessment is given to learners in grades TK-12 who have been identified as English learners. These learners continue to take the assessment annually until they are reclassified as fluent English proficient. In order to be considered proficient in English and reclassify, a learner must score a 4 on each of the four domains AND score a “meets or exceeds” standards on the ELA portion of the SBAC OR  a “meets or exceeds” the grade level norm on NWEA MAP.

Our EL team will reach out to schedule your learner’s ELPAC assessment mid-February.

Test Prep Support

We want to prepare all EL learners for the summative ELPAC. Our weekly ELD sessions will include test-taking strategies and tips on how to be successful on the test as we get closer to our testing season. Additionally, the required ELD assignments provided by your EF will include directed test preparation for all grade levels.
